Happy Memorial Day

432

Memorial Day originally was intended to honor the Union soldiers who died in the American Civil War and was initially always supposed to be May 30. For my international readers, the Union soldiers were fighting against slavery and for northern fiscal domination. At any rate, it then became the last Monday in May every year. First the holiday was expanded to include honoring all American soldiers who died in wars. Not to be confused with Veterans Day which honors those who lived through them. In 1971, Richard Nixon was the one responsible for changing the date to be the floating last Monday of May as opposed to the solid and dependable May 30. Make of that what you will. This year the date would be the same whichever way it was figured.
