Whenever I play a game that lets me save anywhere, I always leave a couple of untouched extra saves at key points of the story. For example, in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, I like to play the Arsenal Gear section over an over (You know, the one where Snake and Raiden team up to fight the Arsenal Tengu soldiers), so you can be sure I have an easily accessible save to play that section anytime I want.
There are other games that are far richer, games where the adventure and progression offer more options of how to proceed, what dialogue options to choose, and even what weapons to use and costumes to wear for particular sections of the game.
I’m talking about games like Skyrim or Fallout, where reloading an old save can become a very interesting adventure on its own, as you re-discover where you were doing, why, and how you want to tackle the next bit.
I love when that happens, because it creates a new branch that diversifies the enjoyment of the gaming experience in a way that’s better than just re-starting everything from the beginning.
