Iron Sky

I’ve reported before about Iron Sky, the trailer looked pretty insane and we had all been waiting for it’s release when trouble hit. The film maker’s distributor, Revolver, decided that the film would be released to play in cinemas in the UK for one day only. Previously the film had been released in other European countries and seemed to be doing well, so fans were very unhappy with this plan and took to the internet. The distributor eventually allowed a longer release in the UK and the Iron Sky site started a Demand The Movie page where fans could request to see the film in their cities, which currently shows future screenings here in the states. I saw the movie on DVD and didn’t realize that it was still in release.

Now on with the movie. What a weird fucking movie! Full of satire and weirdness, Iron Sky is a bit hard to nail down. It’s very tongue in cheek and takes a swing at everyone, the USA, the United Nations and most of all Nazis.

In the last moments of World War II, a secret Nazi space program evaded destruction by fleeing to the Dark Side of the Moon. During 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis construct a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers.

When American astronaut James Washington (Christopher Kirby) puts down his Lunar Lander a bit too close to the secret Nazi base, the Moon Führer (Udo Kier) decides the glorious moment of retaking the Earth has arrived sooner than expected. Washington claims the mission is just a publicity stunt for the President of the United States (Stephanie Paul), but what else could the man be but a scout for the imminent attack by Earth forces? The Fourth Reich must act!

Two Nazi officers, ruthless Klaus Adler (Götz Otto) and idealistic Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), travel to Earth to prepare the invasion. In the end when the Moon Nazi UFO armada darkens the skies, ready to strike at the unprepared Earth, every man, woman and nation alike, must re-evaluate their priorities.

The cast is pretty great and the movie is really entertaining, even if it is a bit of a mind fuck. Julia Dietze is cute and a button and it’s hard not to have naughty thoughts about her. I thought she looked familiar so I looked up her IMDB and realized back in the day she was in Pura vida Ibiza with the one and only Tom Wlaschiha. And then I fell down the Internet Hole watching Tom videos.

If you like men in uniforms then Götz Otto is Klaus Adler will probably do it for you. But I think my favorite was Peta Sergeant is Vivian Wagner, the President’s PR HBIC. Whoa man, from the costume changes (label review here) to the boobs to the never ending well of anger and trickery, she’s got the whole package. I really would recommend this movie. There is so much crazy CGI and madness and humor that it leaves you wondering, what the hell did I just watch. So go demand the movie in your city or buy the DVD and then make all your friends watch it. They will probably thank you for it.
