RIP James Doohan

— Molly Case on August 31st, 2005 @ 5:13 am General Fandom, Movies, Real Life

Today is the anniversary of the date James Doohan got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Best known for his role as Scotty on Star Trek, the actor passed away last month, after a year long battle with Altzheimers. It is confirmed that a portion of his ashes will soon be sent into space, as were those of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. He is survived by his wife and nine children. Interestingly, he was Canadian and was just very good at doing accents. After trying a number of accents out, the Scotty character got the Scot dialect. Doohan did the voice of Kardassian on Duckman, but he turned down the Star Trek homage/fan bitchslap episode of Futurama. Along with the original cast members who agreed, Futurama’s overly obsessed fanboy space creature had to collect Welshie, as Scotty was not available. Not only was Doohan born in Vancouver, but he served in the Royal Canadian Artillery and was injured in World War II, although Star Trek cameras shot around his missing finger and scars. He was one of many WWII veterans to come out publicly in support of Steven Spielberg’s very strong opening scene in Saving Private Ryan. A life well-lived. RIP.

Cyberparanoia

— Molly Case on August 26th, 2005 @ 8:57 am Real Life

This seems like something out of an overly something cyberpunk novel, but I recently read that on this date in 1987, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed September 11 as 9-1-1 Emergency Number Day. First of all, does anyone know if this is true? Secondly, how would one properly celebrate such a day? (via Wikipedia)

The Big Easy

I first spotted cute little goth girl Gia, with the cyber human bar code on her hip, on Gothic Sluts. Here is a sample gallery of her from Barely Evil. I hear she is a serious wrestler now, although that seems like such an evolution to me, given her pixie-ish good looks in earlier work.

Darth Lucas Silences Japanese Critics

— Molly Case on August 9th, 2005 @ 1:42 am General Fandom, Books, Movies

Japanese print media, although often more lurid than its American counterparts, tends to try to maintain the politest possible relations with the various public relations and management firms who handle the entertainment properties they do press on. This is generally not press in the way that Americans think of press, because we like to maintain the illusion that our press is free and honest and not slave to advertising interests. Japanese magazines routinely run articles by publicists and managers for approval before going to press. Generally, it is expected that a movie rep, for example, will correct any factual errors and try to remove spoilers and perhaps suggest any talking points they would prefer not be left out. In the case of the new Star Wars movie, however, the Lucasfilm reps have far overstepped the more standard levels of censorship or correction. They have excised any real analysis of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Critics have had to pull references to everything from political analogies to myth archetypes in their articles about the film. Magazines were told they would not have rights to run promo photography from the movie if they did not comply with all demands. This essentially means that the movie can’t be talked about in any meaningful way in the Japanese press. Enter Hiroto Kobayashi’s Cyzo magazine. Hiroto Kobayashi started off as the editor of Wired Japan, which he helmed until the parent magazine was sold to Conde Nast. Cyzo in print and on the web was launched to have a magazine which was a bit more free to truly speak to the people, to make access to information in Japan less restricted. This month it blew wide open the Star Wars censorship story, which previously had only been discussed in film critics’ blogs online.

Gay Superheroes of Eastern Europe

— Molly Case on August 8th, 2005 @ 6:26 am Web Sites

Okay, Fleshbot linked this site a little while ago and I still haven’t decyphered it as I don’t read any Eastern Bloc languages. Nonetheless, I thought I’d share the link to this gallery of hunky superheroes, and perhaps supervillains, of the erotically male-on-male persuasion. Some of the art pieces appear to be created by someone named Joe Mondo. I can’t tell how many of these may be Photoshops of beefcake photos and how many of these may be original paintings, but they are certainly entertaining to look at either way.

Play Magazine Girls of Gaming Issue 1: Bloodrayne Cover

— Molly Case on August 7th, 2005 @ 12:07 pm Gadgets, Movies, Web Sites

Direct 2 Drive is IGN’s entry into the gamer digital distribution marketplace. IGN is the parent company of such sites as Rotten Tomatoes and Cheats Codes Guides. This makes them a perfect partner for video game companies looking to sell downloadable versions of their existing games to IGN’s built-in audience. According to their corporate site, they are experts in what man aged 18-34 want. Using this expertise, they are now selling their exclusive downloadable Girls of Gaming magazine. This is basically an artifical girl artificial girlie magazine. If the magazine is only pixels, that is all right because the girls are only pixels. I believe original producer Play Magazine may have a traditional paper version of GoG available on their site, but it seems more appropriate to check out digital divas in a digital format.

Thomas S. Roche New Editor at Eros Guide Erotica EZine

— Molly Case on August 3rd, 2005 @ 6:01 am General Fandom, Books

I first discovered author Thomas S. Roche years ago in a copy of Blue Blood, back when it was a print publication, back when finding that sort of material was nearly impossible, back when I felt like I was the only one who liked the things I liked. Blue Blood was my favorite magazine ever, partly because it introduced me to talents like Thomas S. Roche, who I might never otherwise have discovered. Roche is simply one of the best short story writers who ever lived. His name alone anywhere on the table of contents of an anthology is enough to get me to buy it. His own editorial turn for his Noirotica series of anthologies takes the noir genre of hardboiled men and dangerous dames to its necessary sexual conclusion. A month or two ago, Thomas Roche sent me an email telling me he had been reading my little site for quite some time and had only just gotten around to checking out the About Us portion - that is the royal we - where I mentioned that he was one of my favorite authors. He said, “it was particularly nice to run across my name in that list alongside some of my very favorite writers on a site I’ve come to enjoy so much.” I was so overcome that I was too shy to write back, but I guess I can still plug this talented scribe’s newest venture as the managing editor of Eros Zine and of course stalk him via his personal site, the adorably-named Skid Roche.

Terry Pratchett Schools J. K. Rowling

— Molly Case on August 2nd, 2005 @ 9:45 pm General Fandom, Books, Real Life

In a recent interview with Time Magazine, Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling claimed to not particularly like fantasy and to not really have thought of herself as writing fantasy while she was working on her best-selling books. Long-time fantasy genre favorite Terry Pratchett sent out a statement where he said, “I would have thought that the wizards, witches, trolls, unicorns, hidden worlds, jumping chocolate frogs, owl mail, magic food, ghosts, broomsticks and spells would have given her a clue?” According to the BBC, Pratchett has sold more than forty million copies of his own books over his more than three decades of fantasy writing. In other potted news, apparently Chinese pirates have been distributing Chinese language versions of the new Harry Potter book, as translations were scheduled to be made available later than the English version. Sounds like a flaw in the bizarre security plan which was part of the hype for the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince book launch.

Naked Bai Ling Not Senator Bana Breemu

— Molly Case on August 2nd, 2005 @ 4:53 am General Fandom, Books, Movies, Real Life

Speaking of celebrity skin. This past May, there were a slew of rumors going around about Bai Ling aka Ling Bai, best known for her turn as Myca in The Crow. A Playboy spread of her appeared and she went to the press, claiming that George Lucas cut her from Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith possibly because of her nude pictorial. Credible sources suggest that this was just a publicity ruse. In fact, she only had four lines in the film to begin with and her Senator Bana Breemu character was cut along with Lucas’ own daughter because he felt the plot line they were in was distracting from the main storyline. Bai Ling’s bio is rife with somewhat extraordinary claims which are always mitigated somehow, such as the way she told the press that her Playboy appearance was “possibly” the reason for her being ousted from the newest Star Wars flick. She was associated with the democracy protests in Tiannamen Square. She spent three years in the People’s Liberation Army from age fourteen. She was in a mental hospital. She was a Chinese movie star before she was eighteen. She may never be able to return to her homeland because of her controversial appearance in the Red Corner thriller about a businessman framed for murder in China. I’m going to tell you right now that I think she is gorgeous and I completely believe the mental hospital part.

Brad Pitt Bad Boy of Troy Naked in Playgirl

— Molly Case on August 1st, 2005 @ 3:58 am Books, Movies, Real Life

I notice that my previous post about Brad Pitt aka Achilles aka the bad boy of Troy is being found on a whole lot of searches for Brad Pitt Naked. I guess this means you all would really like to find you some naked Brad Pitt. So I’d like to oblige. In my perfect universe, there would be naked photos of brave Achilles fully erect and done with the assistance of someone of the caliber of Roger Pratt, Troy’s oscar-nominated cinematographer. Unfortunately, the only ones I’ve seen are those which were shot by a papparazzi in the West Indies when Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow were vacationing there in 1995. Pitt brought legal action against Playgirl when it tried to publish ten nude shots of him in its August 1997 issue. I was able to find two of them scanned in on the web on the Travel Gayzette. Who knows how long they will stay up now that I’ve linked them. Apparently, sexy Brad won a partial recall of the offending issue of Playgirl, but Playgirl’s defense that the photos had already run in European tabloids in ‘95 apparently held some water with the judge. I’m not wholly sure what the point of a partial recall is. If the magazine had to cease distribution of the issue but did not have to pull copies already on the newsstand, it seems like a decade or so later, it might be possible to find nude photos of the actor on the web. Apparently collectors would like to sell you a copy of this rare back issue for $40 to $75 a pop too. Someone let me know if any of these magazine sellers are legit. Or send me a link if you know where to find more pix. Did I mention how good I thought Brad Pitt was in Troy? And how hot? Good. I thought I might have said something about that before.
